Animal welfare in Danish pig production is about ensuring that all pigs are
ethically and humanely cared for throughout their lives. The debate about
welfare in livestock production has to address the balance between greater
ethical consideration for animals and the realities of the market, related to
consumers’ willingness to pay for foods from higher welfare
systems.
Danish pig production is efficient and competitive. Maintenance
of high welfare standards is paramount throughout the whole production chain,
both on the farm, during transport and finally at the abattoir. This can only be
achieved if managed by knowledgeable and well-trained stockmen on the farm,
hauliers and abattoir staff. The Danish co-operative system has traditionally
placed major emphasis on the education and training of staff at all
levels.
This brochure describes the wide range of work already being
undertaken by the Danish industry which has already delivered significant
welfare improvements and intends to maintain this progress in the years ahead.
